Three spots a short drive from the cabin, all worth the trip.

Drift Sauna

A Nordic sauna circuit at Pacific Gateway Marina overlooking San Juan Harbour — cedar sauna, two cold plunge tubs, an outdoor cold shower, and a fire-pit rest area. The perfect way to end a day in the tide pools or on the trail.

Practical Resources

The official sources we check ourselves before a beach walk or a hike.

Port Renfrew Tide Tables

From Fisheries and Oceans Canada. A 1.2 m or lower low tide is best for the tide pools at Botanical Beach — check before you head out.

BC Parks — Juan de Fuca Park

Official park page for the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, Botanical Beach, China Beach, and Sombrio. Check the advisories tab before any hike — closures and conditions change.

Surfline — Surf & Wave Forecasts

Surf and swell forecasts for Sombrio, Jordan River, and other south-island breaks. Useful for planning a paddle, a surf, or just figuring out whether the wave action will be worth photographing.

BC Wildfire Service — Current Bans & Restrictions

Always worth a quick check in summer. The Coastal Fire Centre updates Category 1, 2, and 3 prohibitions through the season.
