Juan de Fuca Marine Trail Set to Reopen This Summer

May 4, 2026 3 min read

Some of the best news we've heard all spring: BC Parks announced this week that the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail — the 47-kilometre coastal route running from China Beach to Botanical Beach, right past our front door — is on track to fully reopen for hiking and backcountry camping this summer.

If you've been following the story, you know the trail took a beating. A series of major fall and winter storms in late 2024 and 2025 washed out sections, toppled big trees, and destabilized slopes along the coast. Several bridges, boardwalks, and shelters were damaged. For more than a year, large stretches have been closed to keep hikers safe.

Crews are now well into the rebuild, working in phases alongside the Pacheedaht First Nation, in whose territory the trail sits.

What's happening on the ground

The repairs are substantial. BC Parks is flying in and installing roughly seven engineered bridges — from small creek crossings to larger storm-resilient spans. They're also building more than 800 metres of stepped boardwalk, plus multiple staircases through the steepest, most unstable terrain. In a few places, the trail is being rerouted entirely to bypass landslides and ongoing slope instability — better long-term, and safer underfoot.

The total estimated cost is around $950,000, with most of the funding coming through the federal Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program.

When can you actually hike it?

A confirmed reopening date will be announced in mid-May, once the major bridge work is close to wrapped up. That timing is intentional — BC Parks wants people to be able to plan trips with confidence.

Minor repairs (resurfacing, railing fixes, small bridge components) will continue through summer and fall while the trail stays open. Expect brief delays in spots as crews keep working, and please follow all signage on the route.

Why this matters from the cabin

The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail is one of the reasons guests come to Port Renfrew. Whether you're tackling the full 47 km over four to five days or just heading out for a day hike to Mystic Beach or Sombrio, it's some of the most beautiful — and most demanding — coastal walking on the south island. Having it back, end to end, is a big deal for our little corner of Vancouver Island.

The cabin sits eight minutes from the Botanical Beach trailhead at the trail's north end, so if you've been thinking about a hike-and-stay summer trip, this is the year.
