Accessibility Statement
Last updated: May 13, 2026
Rachael's Retreat is committed to making our website and stay information usable for everyone, including guests with disabilities. We believe the BC coast should be accessible to all, and we take the same care with our website that we take with our cabin.
Conformance Target
We aim for our website to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance — the internationally recognized standard for web accessibility. We test new content against these guidelines and address issues as we find them.
What We've Done
- Descriptive alternative text on every image so screen readers can describe our cabin and the surrounding area.
- Semantic HTML structure with clear headings, landmarks, and ARIA labels for navigation.
- High-contrast colour palette designed for readability in bright outdoor lighting and on small screens.
- Real text rather than text embedded in images, so it can be resized, copied, or read aloud.
- Keyboard-accessible navigation, including the mobile bottom nav.
- Responsive design that adapts to phones, tablets, and desktops.
- The
lang="en-CA"attribute so assistive technology pronounces content correctly.
Known Limitations
We're a small two-person operation and the website is hand-built rather than templated, which has trade-offs:
- The embedded Google Map on the homepage is a third-party iframe. It has a descriptive title and lazy-loads, but the interactive map controls follow Google's accessibility behaviour, not ours.
- Some decorative SVG illustrations don't carry alternative text because they are purely visual flourishes. Functional and content imagery always has alt text.
Cabin Accessibility
The cabin itself has some physical limitations that may affect guests with mobility needs: the property is on a wooded lot with uneven ground, the entrance has a small step, and the bathroom is not roll-in. We're happy to talk through specifics before you book — please reach out and we'll give you an honest answer about whether the cabin will work for your stay.
Found a Barrier? Let Us Know.
If you encounter any part of our website that's difficult to use, or if you'd like information in a different format, please email us. We aim to respond within two business days.

Feedback and Continued Improvement
Accessibility is ongoing, not a one-time checkbox. We review this statement and the site itself periodically, and we welcome feedback from guests, advocates, and assistive technology users. Your input genuinely helps us improve.
